Video: How did Halstrom High School begin?
Dr. Karen Glynn Bishop founded
HALSTROM HIGH SCHOOLŪ (formerly Futures High School) in 1985.
It was created by her personal challenge to develop a program that
integrated the successful teaching strategies found in alternative
education programs. She envisioned a private school commited
to providing individualized instruction to foster students' academic
growth and success. She empowered staff, instructors, students
and parents.
Tutoring programs were offered to students in grades 7-12 and credit was awarded to students in grades 9-12. In 1986, Futures High
School registered as a private school with the state of California.
Futures High SchoolŪ - Oceanside began awarding diplomas in 1988-89. Futures expanded in 1990 with the acquisition of a high school in Mission Viejo and the opening of Futures High School - San Diego in 1991. Participation in the Anytime, Anywhere Learning program began in spring 1998 with the distribution of over 40 laptop computers to instructors and support staff members.
Futures High School name was changed to Halstrom High School in
2007.
